6th Grade Language Arts Syllabus
Mrs. Manship, Mrs.Kerr, Mrs. Brock, Mrs. Canfield & Mr. Colleli 2016-2017 Welcome to Middle School and 6th grade language arts class! We are looking forward to working with you and anticipate a busy, productive, and exciting year. Below, we have included some information to make sure you feel comfortable and ready to learn in your new school. 6th Grade Language Arts Curriculum These are the goals students will be working toward in sixth grade from the Maryland Common Core State Curriculum Framework. In addition to these objectives, students will also engage in the 100 Book Challenge program, which requires students to read independently on a fast, fun, and easy level. Students will also read at least three novels this year. The titles of these novels are listed below. For more information on the new Common Core Curriculum standards, visit www.mdk12.org/instruction/common core. Expectations:
CRMS School-Wide Grading Policy: 75% - Standard/Objective Mastery Including but not exclusive to: •Summative assessments - written and performance (chapter and/or unit tests, research related argument writing) •Formative assessments - exit slips, prompts •Presentations •Projects 25% - Daily Activities/Practice Including but not exclusive to: •Classwork •Homework •Notebook Materials for Language Arts: The following materials must be brought to class everyday:
Novels: Novels will primarily be read in class, however there are times that students will have the opportunity to take them home when needed. Titles:
Late Work Policy: Assignments are expected to be completed with effective effort and to be turned in on time. Students will have one day to make up work for each day absent. Students are expected to ask for their absent/missing work. For each day that an assignment is late, up to five days, a point will be deducted from the assignment. After five days, the assignment will not be accepted. Work will be graded “as-is.” Assignments that are not complete will be given a “0”. Tardy to class: The first time students are late to class without a pass, they will receive a verbal warning. The second time students are late, they will receive a contact home. The third time students are late, they will be referred to the administration. Bathroom: If you need to use the restroom during my class: ask for PERMISSION, SIGN-OUT, and get a PASS before leaving the classroom. Please do not interrupt the lesson to use the restroom. Instead, please wait until there is a break in the group activity or while you are completing independent work. If repeated loss of instructional time due to overuse of bathroom privileges (without a doctor’s note) becomes a problem, your parents will be contacted about this concern and you may be issued a pass that limits bathroom use. Rules and Expectations: Since lifelong success depends in part on learning to make responsible choices, we have developed a classroom discipline plan which allows each student some guidance in making responsible choices regarding his or her behavior and thus the opportunity to learn in a positive, nurturing classroom environment. Your child deserves the most positive educational climate possible for his or her growth and we know together we will make a difference in this process. The plan below outlines our classroom rules and consequences for inappropriate behavior. *Arrive on time to class with all materials. *Complete all assignments with your best effective effort. *Submit all assignments on time. *Take your seat and follow the teacher directions immediately. *Respect the personal space and belongings of others. Keep your hands, feet, and objects to yourself. *Raise your hand and wait for permission to speak. * Please let an adult know if someone is bothering you or if you have any concerns. Sixth Grade Disciplinary Course of Action CRMS uses a progressive approach to discipline. Every effort will be made to give you positive incentives, counseling, and guidance to make the best choices possible and participate in a positive learning environment in order to prevent negative consequences. However, if you choose to ignore classroom/school expectations, repeatedly disrupt classroom instruction, or you physically/emotionally harm another person, consequences will range from detention to an administration/guidance referral (depending on the severity and repetition of the offense). Some of the inappropriate behaviors that can cause your child to receive a disciplinary action can include, but are not limited to:
There are also some behaviors that will immediately result in automatic after school detentions or office referrals. In sixth grade, we use a “leveling” system. If students are misbehaving they are told to move their (pre-assigned) number. -“Level 1” is simply a warning. -“Level 2” is a lunch detention, teacher-student conference, and written reflection with parent signature. -“Level 3” is a minor referral with consequences that could include a lunch or after-school detention, being “bounced” to another classroom, loss of privileges, etc. issue) -“Level 4” is an office referral Our goal is to work with you to ensure that your child has a successful year.
